Watchmen Prequel.

I didn’t want to report on this until I really had to and I guess now is the time.  The rumors have been circulating for about a year and it’s looking more likely that any day now we’re going to see a “Watchmen” prequel drop into our collective laps.  Now I’m not trying to poop in everyone’s ice cream here but I don’t want this.  Allen Moore is obviously not involved and even though the guy is batshit crazy, he’s a great writer and has a specific style that is irreplaceable and will be horribly noticeable. The people involved are extremely talented artists and writers such as Joe and Andy Kubert, Darwyn Cooke, Amanda Conner, and J. Michael Straczynski, but it really doesn’t matter who you get, you can’t create lightning in a bottle twice, sorry folks.

Second point: This is a prequel, filling in any holes and giving us back story we don’t want.  You think you want it, but really no answer to any question will make you feel any better or worse for said character.  You were always curious about the shady past of characters like Boba Fett and Wolverine, well when you got them were you satisfied?  After the dust settles you sorta wish for the mystery to return and that will be the case with this.

This book will be a monster and sure, I’m going to buy it and that’s really the point here.  This book will generate revenue and buzz that the comic industry lacks right now, so I’m not saying it’s going to be a waste.  I’ve decided to skip the “You’ve ruined it forever” crap because in this day and age it is what it is.  It’ll be an interesting read, I’m sure it might even be good, but it just won’t recapture the magic and prestige of the original Watchmen and when the dust settles it’ll be just another rehash of an original property to make some money.
