Pop Junk’s 31 Days of Halloween #30 Near Dark

A long time ago in a far off land known as “The 80’s” Vampire movies were treated with the class and dignity they deserve.  In 1987 Kathryn Bigelow who would go on to direct such critically acclaimed movies such as The Hurt Locker and Point Break directed this Vampire flick with the same style of her later films.  The story is about a young man whoreluctantly joins a travelling “family” of evil vampires, when the girl he’d tried to seduce is part of that group.  It’s extremely similar to The Lost Boys which was released the same year and I have no idea which movie was conceived first, I can say near dark is a lot more serious…

it has less of this.

and a lot more of this…

The Vampire’s are totally bad ass and Bill Paxton alone makes any movie worth watching.  Another thing that makes this film stand out is the fact that the writer and director both were intent on making a Western but realized that the interest in the Western genre at the time was almost non-existent, so it was recommended that they mix genres. Since the horror genre was in vogue at the time, the two decided to make a Horror Western.  Can’t fuckin beat that with a stick.  It’s that treatment that really sets this film apart from other movies in it’s genre. The only complaint I have is with the ending which I won’t say because it’s a spoiler.  Watch the movie and decide for yourself.

Clips for this film are scares on the old internets so here’s a taste of a really kick ass scene.
