Pop Junk’s 31 Days of Halloween: #31 Drag Me To Hell

In 2009 Sam Raimi went back to his Horror roots and the results were funny, disgusting and entertaining: exactly what we’ve come to expect from the master of over the top, comical gore and ridiculousness.  Currently standing at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, this film was released in 2009 amides  a sea of horror reboots and remakes which really made this film stand apart.  It’s simplistic plot of a girl trying to break a gypsy curse put upon her by an awesomely disgusting old lady and how it is ruining this girls life.  The protagonist  played by Alison Lohman being battered and psychologically tortured by the results of the curse  is the back drop to the horrific scenes that Sam Raimi bombards you with.  You get the sense that Raimi was bogged down for far too long working on kid friendly Spiderman films and was ready to break free with the creative fury to murder a cuddly kitchen (spoiler) This is a really fun horror movie who’s only major flaw is piss poor CGI and a laughing goat that worked in the vein of Evil Dead but certainly not here.  Some people who’s opinions I respect have told me they hated this film which totally blows my mind, my guess is they hated the ending which is fucking perfect!  If you’ve never seen this movie, it’s worth a buy for your collection.
